The Path of Virtue

Once upon a time, there lived a deeply devout individual who decided to embark on a pilgrimage with his family. As they traveled a long distance, a parching thirst began to afflict the entire family. The surroundings appeared devoid of any source of water.

Faced with this predicament, the pious man implored God for assistance. In that moment, his eyes fell upon a meditating monk not too far away. Promptly, he approached the monk and explained their plight. The monk revealed that a small river flowed to the north, a short distance away, where they could find water to quench their thirst.

Asking his wife and children to remain there, the man hastened to fetch water from the river. However, on his way back, he encountered five individuals who were incredibly thirsty. Unable to ignore their plight, he selflessly offered them all the water he had collected. Returning once more to the river, he encountered another group of five people, equally parched. Without hesitation, he bestowed upon them his entire supply of water.

This cycle repeated itself several times, with the man encountering thirsty individuals repeatedly. As time passed and he failed to return, the monk decided to approach him. Observing the man's selfless actions, the monk inquired, "Oh virtuous soul, why do you continue to refill your bucket from the river, only to empty it for others? What gain do you derive from this?"

The virtuous soul replied, "What gain do I seek? I never pondered over what I received or did not receive. Instead, I abandoned my self-interest and faithfully followed my religious teachings."

The monk questioned further, "What purpose does it serve to adhere to such a religion when your own children and family are left without sustenance? You could have followed your religion as I do."

Seeking guidance, the virtuous soul inquired, "How, Maharaj?" The sage elucidated, "Instead of providing water directly from the river, I directed you to it. Similarly, you could have guided all those thirsty individuals to the river, so that not only your thirst would be quenched but also theirs. In doing so, there would be no need for anyone to empty their buckets."

With those words, the sage vanished, leaving the virtuous soul to contemplate the profound wisdom imparted. From that day forward, the man realized that true virtue lies not only in serving oneself but in empowering others to find their own path towards fulfillment and contentment. And thus, he continued his pilgrimage with renewed purpose and compassion in his heart.
